Hannah & Johnathan’s Engagement Shoot {Park Love}

Love is a journey and for this couple, their love story started as teens with car trip years ago…

That trip ignited a spark and as teenagers in love, they were soon making trips to a local park to meet.

Years later, and more in love than ever,  Johnathan took Hannah for a day out – journey around Cape Town recounting memorable moments and their favourite places. He ended the outing in the same park where they’d spent hours together as teens. And there, in the humble neighbourhood play park that held many memories for them, he asked her to be his wife.

Their engagement shoot, captured by the artistic Tabitha of Illuminate Photography, not only captures moments of love, playfulness and joy, it signifies the start of an exciting new journey!

{How We Met}

Johnathan and I met for the first time when I was 11 years old. Can you believe it?!

The first time (but definitely not the last) I was really captivated by Johnathan was about two years after we first met. After a holiday away in Kleinmond with some mutual friends, instead of my parents giving Johnathan and I a lift home, Johnathan had just gotten his drivers license and he drove the both of us back to Cape Town.

From the moment I set my little 13-year-old feet into his car, the chatting, laughing and the playfulness began. We nattered on and laughed about absolutely everything! While I was still young and in my eyes, Johnathan was much older and oh-so-very-cool, I had never felt so at ease with someone.

The following three years were filled with little catch up chats in parks, eating pies and drinking juice. That’s where the playfulness and the attraction grew until just after my 16th birthday, Johnathan took me up on top of a jungle gym and officially asked me to be his girlfriend. We have been dating for five years this month and those years have been characterised by SO much joy, adventures, laughing and learning what it truly means to fall head over heels, smash bang, in-your-face in love!

{The Proposal}

It was our 42 months and Johnathan and I always do a little something special for whatever monthaversary we are on. So when Johnathan insisted that I clear my schedule and fetched me straight from varsity on sunny Tuesday afternoon, I didn’t think twice. But my, did that day bring about one of the most exciting times of my life.

As I hopped in the car Johnathan put on this adorable little French accent and told me that we were going on a tour of Cape Town. I thought this was the most epic and original idea, but then he drove me back into our leafy suburb and stopped at the BP to get some pies and juice. I thought perhaps he was just filling me up before our big adventure.

Little did I know that Johnathan was actually taking me on a tour of our relationship which started off on our local cricket field where we drank juice and ate pies, just like we did when I was 14 years old! We then headed to a park in Rondebosch, sat on the very bench we had four years ago and ate a big bag of M&Ms (a favourite of ours). We then proceeded to go to the restaurant, where we got milk shakes on our first official date.

We drove over Chapman’s Peak and all the way over to Kommetjie where he run me down onto the beach and kissed me at exactly the spot where we had our first kiss all those years ago. We then went to Llandadno where Johnathan had prepared a picnic with all my favourite foods and we watched the sunset, just like we have done countless times over our relationship.

At every stop off on our tour, Johnathan mentioned something that he remembered about our time there be it something we had chatted about or something I was wearing. It was spectacular!

On the way home, Johnathan turned on some of our favourite love songs and as cheesy as it is, I was singing my heart out.

Johnathan and I were both studying at the time. We had chatted about marriage the month before but as Johnathan was in his final year of studying, he had told me that he simply didn’t have the money right now for us to get engaged. Little did I know that he had actually already BOUGHT the ring, sneaky chop!

Just as I thought the night was coming to an end Johnathan pulled into the park a few blocks away from my home. This was the park that had the most pretty junglegym on which Johnathan first told me that he liked me and where he later first asked me out. I remember thinking to myself ‘oh fabulous, maybe we’ll end the night off with a little kiss on top of our jungle gym,’ little did I know…

I stepped out the car and a bunch of 30 red roses were sitting in an old boat next to the jungle gym, STILL not catching on, I ooh’ed and aaah’ed about the flowers and began skipping back to the car when Johnathan told me to go and wait on top of the jungle gym. I clearly remember climbing up wondering to myself how Johnathan will EVER propose because today had seriously been the absolute greatest, I didn’t know how he could out do himself after this.

Once at the top of the jungle gym together, Johnathan pulled out two little glass jars. The walls of the glass jar were covered with the love letters that we had sent to one another whilst I had been on my gap year overseas, the year before. He had cut heart shapes into the paper and put a candle into the glass so that when the candle was lit our words would light up. SO beautiful.

Whilst giggling to ourselves as we tried to light up the candles that Johnathan made, he jumped up saying he was cold (sneakily just a ploy to get me onto my feet so that he could go onto his knee). I stood up and he started whispering all sorts of sweet nothings into my ear, telling me how much he loved me, he then added a quick ‘hold on’, bent down, rummaged in his bag and then swooped onto his knee where he asked me to marry him and be his wife forever. It was honestly the best thing EVER!
