The story behind this sensational Snow Princess style shoot may resonate with you, as it did for me.

Conceptualised and photographed by the talented  Debbie Lourens, this styled shoot represents the struggle many of us can relate to – the battle to love and accept oneself.

Drawing on her own struggle with depression for inspiration, Debbie wanted the shoot to express a misunderstood character of someone in a dark place, a Snow Princess, who prays to get out of her from her internal prison. Ultimately she realises that she is perfect, loved, unique and accepted just as she is and by believing in her own self-worth she is set free from her own self-doubt and sadness.

Feeling Unworthy

“Since starting photography I have grown so much and learned so much, but what I battled to learn was to encourage, accept and, above all, love myself,” says Debbie, “I placed my self-worth in the hands of others and it hurt when I didn’t fit into certain areas of the industry. Increasingly retreated back into my shell – I was barely recognisable to myself.”

This is not High School

“One day I realised that what others think of me is not nearly as important (if at all) as what I think of myself, how I feel of myself,” says Debbie, “I have always been a positive and happy person it was just as if I had forgotten how to be me. It was sort of like an epiphany – I’m not in high school any more! I don’t need to feel I have to impress anyone in the industry.”

Inspired and Grateful

“The most important person I need to take care of is me, only then can I take care of the ones I love and last, but not at all least, my beautiful clients who have supported and encouraged me throughout my photography journey,” says Debbie.

“To all my clients, I truly value you – without you I would not have learnt the things I have learnt or experienced the things I have. And I think that it’s indirectly because of you that I came to realise that I needed to believe in myself and stop worrying what others think.”

“I hope that my story inspires you to appreciate your self-worth and to encourage, support, love and believe in yourself always,” says Debbie.

This is such a beautiful shoot!!!

Debbie – Loved the way you conceptualized and photographed the shoot. For once, it’s awesome to come across a styled shoot that has so much more meaning than what meets the eye. Thanks for sharing your story.
Marnél – The dramatic make-up is absolutely beautiful. It’s amazing how it fits in so beautifully with both attires.
Monique – Thanks for the sharing the lovely prettiness :)
