It may be lucky but, like many brides, Roxy was devastated to wake up to rain on her wedding day.

{How We Met}

Nate and I met six years ago in Stellenbosch, at a club where a mutual friend was having her birthday party.

{The Proposal}

One Saturday Nate took me out shopping. It was amazing – he bought me everything my little heart desired that day! And he kept asking me if I was having a good time, which was a bit weird. Then he suggested we go out for dinner and that I should get all dressed up.

He was so talkative so I knew something was up! When we got to the restaurant it was on a deck overlooking the water, and he got down on one knee and proposed. I was so excited I just grabbed the ring from the box and put it on myself!

When we walked into the restaurant there was champagne and roses waiting on the table and everyone clapped and congratulated us. It was amazing!

{The Wedding}

Our wedding was romantic! Our theme was vintage romance, I have a love for all things old and vintage, and I love the romanticism of the past! Our colours were soft pastels (we got married in spring, so we decided to go with softer colours) and we didn’t want to pick one or two colours and restrict our decor.

The vintage theme also meant I could incorporate some personal touches like my grandmother’s wedding album and little snippets about our family history.

We had a small group of 55 guests – just our closest friends and family. It rained on the day which made the room feel warm and cosy!

{Rethinking the Wedding Budget}

Our initial budget had to be revised – I think we both were a little naïve to what weddings actually cost! We did better with the revised budget and we spent a lot of time hunting for good suppliers with reasonable prices. It was worth the hard work though, as our suppliers were amazing and didn’t break the bank.

{Wedding DIY}

I did a lot of DIY! I couldn’t find teacups with a design I liked so I decoupaged plain ones and Nate helped me make them into candles.

I bought a bunch of old books and tied them with lace for the centrepieces and collected everyone’s old jars for the candles and flowers.

I sewed material covers for the little notebooks we gave our guests as favours and made the table numbers, seating charts and name tags as well.

I also designed, printed and put together our wedding programmes which doubled as an “activity book” with a personalised crossword puzzle, sudoku, menu and joke book.

It took many months of sewing in front of the TV and staying up late, but it was completely worth it to see how delighted our guests were, and also helped to keep costs as low as possible.

{Advice for Brides-To-Be}

I read a quote the other day by the Dalai Llama, “Sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck.” My advice to brides to be would be to keep this quote in mind leading up to and on your wedding day.

What I wanted more than anything was for it not to rain on our wedding day. I wanted to have a sunny, spring ceremony in the gardens and a reception underneath the stars. The day of our wedding I woke up to pouring rain. And it rained pretty much the whole day! Everything had to be moved inside. I was devastated at first, but once I accepted it I began to see the beauty in the rain. It stopped long enough for me to walk down to the venue and for us to have some beautiful photos taken.

The photos came out beautifully with the romantic grey skies and an umbrella – which suited our theme! Everything glistened with raindrops and looked amazing. And all the grandmothers told us what good luck rain is on a wedding day. It was far better than I imagined and I am glad that I didn’t get my way. Sometimes life has a better plan for you!

Lovely wedding! And it’s always fascinating to hear the bride’s/couple’s account of what made the occasion so special!
