“A good marriage is the union of two good forgivers” was quote displayed at this lovely DIY wedding.

What a lovely quote from Ruth Bell Graham. Even though Natalia and David put a lot of hard work into their wedding day, they reminded themselves that the day wasn’t more important than their marriage.

Together with family, they crafted the fairytale day Natalia had been dreaming about. This is their love story and DIY wedding…

How We Met
We met through mutual friends during many evenings of socialising, going out for drinks, braais and playing endless amounts of games of pool to find out who would reign as King or Queen. Needless to say, we dated, got engaged . . . and lived happily ever after.

The Proposal
We went away for a chilled weekend to Langebaan. On the Saturday, David was adamant that we should go for a drive, he literally asked me about 10 times and every time my response was “No, I just want to chill at home.” Eventually, by midday on Sunday I gave in and we took a drive to Jacobsbaai.

We arrived at Jacobsbaai on a stunning summer afternoon. I remember how I was in awe with the stunning little bay, views, the curio shop with beautiful shells and handmade items, and the restaurant with a menu true to the weskus area. I took a walk on the beach to take some photos of the bay and all of a sudden, when I turned around, David was on bended knee…

I looked at him and for a moment didn’t register what was going on, at first I thought he was kidding and actually said, “Are you joking, David?” He looked me straight in the eye and couldn’t utter a word in response. Eventually David, with a tear slipping from his eye, asked me if I would Marry hi . What a memorable and happy moment this was.

The Wedding

Ever since I was a young girl, I used to dream about my wedding day and how I envisioned it to be.

To me it was truly a fairy tale wedding theme – the colour schemes was soft shades of cream, white and gold laced with fairy lights and candles setting the ambience. No actual description would ever do the entire setup justice – It was simply too beautiful to put to words.

I’ve been asked there was anything I would have changed and my response is no! From start to finish everything was absolutely amazing!

The Wedding DIY
Having had an exact idea of what I wanted was an interesting experience when it came to sourcing everything. For example, I found the perfect ivory table cloths but the supplier did not have matching napkins. I begged to purchase some existing table cloths, in order to have napkins made by my mommy dearest, but the supplier refused. So, after many material store visits, finding the matching material was like finding gold and my mom made 140 napkins with lace embroidered napkin holders and “dress chair covers.”

I was set on matching the invites with the gold lace embroidery. So David, my amazing sis, Nicole, and I tried our hand at the glue gun and needle and gold thread. We even sprayed an old luggage case gold , had crowns laser cut and burned the edges for a rustic look – how much fun it was to read all the messages on the crown the next day.

A last minute decision to have “N & D” bling cake toppers had David running around in circles in search of someone to laser cut the letters. He even mastered the art of gluing the crystals on the letters.

Many nights of painting wooded boards, in different shapes and sizes, with black chalkboard paint for our signs and quotes meant many many late nights of painting at Nicole’s house. In fact, we we only got into bed at 02h00 the night before the BIG day!

I’m so grateful for all the amazing fairies that contributed to make this a special day. My mom, sister, my mother-in-law and sister-in-law were all amazing. From draping the mini trees with fairy lights to setting up tables for gifts, guest message and the dessert/candy table, no DIY task was ever too big or too small!

Advice for Brides-To-Be

You can read about it in a wedding book, on a blog or in a magazine but the best advice is not to worry about the small stuff. So much happens on the day that you forget or don’t get to see it anyway. Everything will be just what it’s meant to be so smile, laugh and savour every moment!

And remember, a Wedding is one day of your life, a marriage is a lifetime!
